Proceedings of 1st International Conference on Diffusion in Solids and Liquids (DSL 2005), p.531 - 533, 2005/07

Recently, we formed atomic-scale graded structures in some miscible alloys and observed the decomposition in Bi$$_{3}$$Pb$$_{7}$$ intermetallic compound by sedimentation of atoms under strong gravitational field. In this study, we measured positron lifetime of centrifuged Bi$$_{3}$$Pb$$_{7}$$, to which the composition change was very small as it was treated at low temperature. It was found that the positron lifetime became longer than that of starting state. This indicated that the point defects (vacancy or divacancy) increased in the sample by centrifugal treatment. We are now investigating the relationship between increase in point defects and sedimentation of atoms.

Solute elements suppress the radiation damage in W alloys; Comparison between first-principles-based modeling and experimental evidence

We conducted first-principles investigations of stability and mobility of various solute atoms in W crystals, and discovered that displaced W atoms having one-dimensional motion bind with some specified solute atoms and form mixed dumbbells. We also discovered easy three-dimensional migration paths of the mixed dumbbells. This study was followed by kinetic Monte Carlo modeling, which suggested that the mixed dumbbells can suppress radiation-induced vacancies, agreeing with experimental evidence. In the presentation, we also explain recent updates of first-principles investigation and experiments for various W binary alloys.

In the fields of accelerator target systems, nuclear power, aerospace, etc., radiation degradation of structural materials and equipment occurs, and therefore, the development of materials with high durability and excellent functions is expected. In order to create innovative materials that can be used in radiation fields, we are developing a new non-destructive inspection technique that can accurately measure the internal defects of various materials in radiation fields. As an innovative material, high-entropy alloys (HEA) are known for their high strength and ductility, and are expected to be used in various applications. In this talk, we will report on the construction of a measurement principle that enables multi-simultaneous measurements even in radiation fields, the status of HEA prototypes, and the status and progress of irradiation analysis of metals and other materials.
